This is without doubt one of the best books of its kind. Small - yes, it will easily fit in your pocket - yet detailed and precise, it explains all key terms associated with Reiki in way that is clear and insightful.
It includes information from both traditional Japanese and Western lineages and will no doubt help clarify terms that have long confused you.
Consider it a dictionary of Reiki - one that will help you gain an awareness of many concepts, some of which you most probably never knew existed.

Walter Lübeck is one of the world's most respected Reiki writers and this books has become something of a Reiki classic.
It contains a wealth of information and techniques on the Reiki hand positions, the chakras, giving Reiki treatments, using crystals, oils and pendulums.
It also teaches several Reiki meditations and has a valuable index of illnesses and specific Reiki positions to help heal them.
While the title is probably a bit grandiose given the book is only 192 pages, most people will get a lot out of it.
$29.95 (Walter Lübeck)
This is a no-nonsense book with a lot of information.
As the name would suggest, it covers the main areas you will learn if you take classes for the various Reiki levels.
Naturally, it shouldn't be considered a substitute for actually taking a course; but the large number of techniques taught and the practical nature of the book make it useful for both Reiki beginners and teachers alike.
Highlights include: lots of detail on the Reiki symbols, using Reiki with crystals and how to become a Reiki Master and what to teach at each level.
$32.95 (Maureen D. Kelly)
One of Paula Horan's earliest books, it is still very relevant today.
Apart from covering the Reiki basics - how Reiki works, the Reiki levels, the Reiki precepts etc. - it provides heaps of additional information on complementing Reiki with other techniques and modalities.
As a result, both seasoned practitioners and beginners can get much out of the book.
The history chapter is a little bit outdated, but we can still learn much from it if it is not understood literally.
Highlights include: How to remove energy blocks, working with crystals, using color and sound, information on the chakras, meditation technique for centering, body psychology - how and where emotions are stored in the body.$29.95 (Dr. Paula Horan)
Because all of the traditional Reiki symbols appear in this book, it caused a stir when it first came out.
Since then the Internet has made it less shocking, but the bold qualities that led to the original decision still color the rest of the work.
In my opinion the vibe of the book is better suited to women than men - Stein tends to have done most of her work with women - but if you're a man and don't need to defend 'maleness' you should still get much from the work.$34.95 (Diane Stein)
Dr. Paula Horan is someone who not only has a deep understanding of Reiki, she also has a deep connection to the realm of the Spiritual.
Her lucid and easy-to-read 'Exploring Reiki' will answer almost every general question you've ever had about Reiki (Reiki Masters excluded!).
It is not a book that teaches Reiki techniques as such, but for a Reiki beginner it will prove invaluable in helping you get a firm grasp of what Reiki is, how is taught (and should be taught!) and how it can help you.
$27.95 (Dr. Laxmi Paula Horan)

The Japanese Art of Reiki is a unique look at Reiki from a traditional Japanese perspective.
Beginning with an overview of the historical context Reiki grew out of, it goes on to examine different types of 'ki' (qi), the Five Elements, The Reiki Precepts and many traditional Japanese Reiki techniques to strengthen and develop your practice.
Amongst other things It also discusses Reiki symbols, mantras and attunements - all from a very traditional Japanese point of view.
While many books claim to teach authentic Japanese Reiki, this is one that actually does so.$39.95 (Stiene and Stiene)
This is not a book to get if you are new to Reiki.
It's not even the book to get if you have only a couple of books in your Reiki library.
But if you are a Reiki teacher or someone curious to discover more about the way Reiki was practiced in Japan by Mikao Usui and Dr. Hayashi, then this book will prove illuminating.
If you have a hankering for the esoteric; if you would like to learn lots of symbols that are not traditionally taught in Usui Reiki, then this is the book for you.
While it begins with an examination of the traditional Reiki levels and what they entail, the second part ventures into the more exotic lands of ancient symbols, crystals, psychic surgery, spirit guides and the like.
$30.95 (Out of stock)
Mikao Usui was the originator of the system of Reiki. This is his handbook.
For those wishing to gain an understanding of how he approached and healed various medical conditions then this is the natural place to start.
With 80 color photos showing the hand positions Usui used, as well as important notes and introduction by Frank Arjava Petter, this book is ideal for anyone who wants to get to the roots of Reiki.
It is somewhat technical in nature, however, so it is probably not the first Reiki book you should buy unless you have a more scientific / medical bent to learning.
It is best suited to Reiki teachers or practitioners with experience who want to learn as much as they can about Reiki as it was originally practiced.$29.95 (Usui, Petter)
The great thing about Petter's books is his willingness to be honest about Reiki, its challenges, and his own personal successes and failures.
He never pretends to be some high floating guru immune to the ups and downs of the world.
Because of this it is easy to connect to his words, because it is more like they come from an experienced friend than an inaccessible teacher.$25.95 (Petter)
This is not a book to get if you're an experienced Reiki practitioner; but if you're new to Reiki, have heard a lot of confusing ideas, and aren't sure what to make of them - or how to reconcile them - then this the book for you.
The book clarifies a lot of the Reiki nonsense that is out in the world today. And it proves controversial.$49.95 (Steve Murray)
Reiki Fire is a practical Reiki manual written in the usual clear, down-to-earth style that Petter is loved for.
While slim (pages = 126), it nevertheless contains a large amount of practical information including details on:
Reiki history, the Reiki hand positions, the chakras, relaxation, disease, repressed emotions, affirmations, levels of consciousness, the Reiki symbols, the Reiki levels and becoming a Reiki Master.
The book helped turn Petter into an internationally renowned Reiki figure.$25.95 (Petter)
This excellent book provides an enlightening guide to treating over 80 common health problems.
It is divided up into broad categories like the 'digestive system', the 'cardiovascular system' and the musculo-skeletal system', but remains clear and easy to follow - even to the medical layperson.
The wonderful thing about Reiki for Common Ailments is that it looks at things from several angles - not just Reiki - to give you a fuller understanding of the medical issues it deals with.$39.95 (Mari Hall)
This is a big Reiki book. It is a comprehensive guide from the Reiki basics to advanced traditional Japanese Reiki techniques.
Plenty of illustrations make learning the hand positions and other techniques easy, and the large volume of material means that with a bit of practice you will soon feel both competent and confident in your newfound Reiki skills.$39.95 (Penelope Quest)
This guide to the 'path and practice of Reiki' packs a lot of content into a 193 page manual.
Using information that has only recently come to light, it starts off by examining the true Reiki history.
It then discusses the various Reiki levels, what they consist of and what we need to consider before attending a course.
Reiki Healer also teaches many techniques, like beaming, smoothing the aura and Reiki manifestation.$24.99 (Lawrence Ellyard)

It contains several valuable meditations specific to the practice of Reiki (found both in the book and on CD) - thus ensuring that the ideas presented don't get stuck on a theoretical level.$35.00 (Lawrence Ellyard)
This book claims to be the 'most comprehensive question and answer guide to Reiki ever written'.
True or not, it is certainly a very thorough Reiki Q & A.
Lawrence Ellyard is fast becoming one of the world's favourite Reiki authors, and this clear and easy-to-read book will no doubt further his reputation.

Reiki Best Practices is perhaps the most comprehensive book of its kind ever written. There is so much information in it that you could practice the techniques in it for the rest of your life and still not get bored.
Better yet, the Reiki practices are laid out in a readily accessible format, so despite the huge volume of content, you are never overwhelmed.
$39.95 (Lübeck and Petter)
The beautiful thing about this book is that it is never dry.
Yes, it presents information on the major Reiki branches in the world today; but it does so in a way that is hugely practical.
The survey of each system is accompanied by different techniques to try and in many cases interviews and contributions from the creators of these systems.
Rather than compare systems, it lets each one speak for itself so that the reader can learn the most possible to further his or her practice.
If you don't want to attend a Reiki course but would still like to practice Reiki, then Steve Murray's books might be for you.
Reiki the Ultimate Guide - Volume 1 takes you through all of the attunements, shows you the Reiki symbols, answers many questions, including more advanced ones regarding Reiki lineage, psychic debris, intent and smudging to name just a few.
This is a controversial book, so if you believe in things being done in the traditional way, don't buy it.
