5 Benefits of Reiki Healing Backed by Research

When people ask me whether Reiki ‘really works’, I understand the question. In a world full of unsubstantiated health claims, healthy scepticism is a good thing. So rather than asking you to take my word for it, let me walk you through five benefits of Reiki healing that are supported by clinical research.

I should be upfront: Reiki research is still a developing field. Studies tend to be small, and large-scale randomised controlled trials are limited. But the evidence that does exist is consistent and encouraging — and it aligns closely with what I’ve observed across 18 years of teaching and more than 350 Reiki Masters trained.

1. Stress Reduction and Deep Relaxation

This is the most well-documented benefit of Reiki, and the one that virtually every recipient experiences. A 2019 study published in the Journal of Evidence-Based Integrative Medicine examined Reiki sessions provided to hospital patients and staff at a large US medical centre. The results showed significant reductions in stress, anxiety and pain after just a single session.

Hartford Hospital in Connecticut, one of the largest teaching hospitals in New England, has been offering Reiki to patients since the early 2000s. Their data shows that Reiki sessions reduced patient anxiety by 94%, pain by 78% and nausea by 80%. These are striking figures, and they have been consistent over many years of the programme.

From a practical standpoint, this is the benefit my students notice first. Within the first week of completing a Reiki Level 1 course, most report feeling calmer, more centred and better able to manage the stresses of daily life — simply from giving themselves a short daily treatment.

2. Pain Management

Pain is complex, and no responsible practitioner would claim that Reiki is a substitute for medical pain management. But research consistently shows that Reiki can help reduce the experience of pain, particularly when used alongside conventional treatment.

A systematic review published in Pain Management Nursing examined multiple studies on Reiki for pain relief and concluded that Reiki demonstrated a statistically significant effect on pain reduction compared to control groups. The researchers noted that Reiki appeared to be particularly helpful for chronic pain conditions.

A study at the University of Michigan Health System found that patients who received Reiki alongside standard care reported significant improvements in pain, fatigue and overall quality of life. Importantly, Reiki was well-tolerated and had no adverse effects — a notable advantage over many pharmacological interventions.

If you are dealing with ongoing pain, a series of Reiki healing sessions can be a valuable addition to your overall management plan. Many of our students also find that learning Reiki gives them a tool to manage pain themselves, at home, whenever they need it.

3. Emotional Wellbeing

Reiki’s impact on emotional health is one of the benefits I see most clearly in my teaching. People come to our courses dealing with grief, anxiety, burnout, relationship stress and the general weight of modern life. After learning Reiki, many describe a palpable shift: they feel lighter, more resilient and better equipped to process difficult emotions.

A 2016 study published in the Journal of Evidence-Based Complementary & Alternative Medicine investigated Reiki’s effects on depressive symptoms, anxiety and overall wellbeing. Participants who received Reiki showed significant improvements in mood and emotional state compared to those who received a placebo treatment.

Another study, conducted at Yale University School of Medicine, examined the effects of Reiki on patients recovering from heart attacks. Beyond the physical benefits, the researchers noted that patients who received Reiki reported greater emotional wellbeing and a more positive outlook during their recovery.

What makes Reiki particularly effective for emotional health is that it addresses the whole person. Rather than targeting a specific symptom, Reiki supports the body’s overall capacity for self-regulation — and that includes emotional processing.

4. Improved Sleep Quality

Poor sleep is one of the most common complaints in modern life, and it is one of the areas where Reiki makes a noticeable difference. While dedicated sleep studies on Reiki are still relatively few, the evidence we do have is positive — and it aligns strongly with what our students report.

Research published in Biological Research for Nursing studied the effects of Reiki on cancer patients and found that Reiki sessions led to improvements in fatigue, pain, anxiety and overall quality of life — all of which are closely linked to sleep quality. Participants reported sleeping more deeply and waking feeling more rested.

In the broader stress-reduction studies, improved sleep is one of the most consistently reported secondary benefits. Since stress and poor sleep are so intimately connected, this makes intuitive sense: by reducing the body’s stress response, Reiki creates conditions that are more conducive to deep, restorative sleep.

This is one of the reasons I encourage all of my students to give themselves a short Reiki treatment before bed. Even ten minutes of self-treatment can help settle the nervous system and ease the transition into sleep. It is one of the simplest and most immediately rewarding applications of Reiki.

5. Complementary to Medical Treatment

Perhaps the most significant development in Reiki’s credibility over the past two decades is its growing acceptance within mainstream healthcare. Reiki is now offered in over 800 hospitals across the United States, including prestigious institutions such as the Cleveland Clinic, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center and Johns Hopkins.

In Australia, Reiki is increasingly recognised as a valuable complementary therapy. It does not interfere with medications, has no known side effects and can be provided to patients of any age or condition — including those who are too unwell for other forms of complementary therapy.

The Yale study mentioned earlier is particularly noteworthy. Researchers examined 37 heart attack patients who were randomly assigned to receive Reiki, relaxation music or standard care alone. The Reiki group showed significantly greater improvements in heart rate variability — a key marker of cardiac health and autonomic nervous system function — compared to the other groups.

What this tells us is that Reiki does not need to replace conventional medicine. It works with it. And increasingly, the medical establishment is recognising this. If you are undergoing treatment for any condition, Reiki can serve as a supportive therapy that enhances your overall recovery and wellbeing.

A Balanced Perspective

I want to be clear: I am not claiming that Reiki is a miracle cure. It is a complementary healing practice with a growing evidence base — but it is not a replacement for medical care, and anyone who tells you otherwise is doing you a disservice.

What I can say, from 18 years of personal experience and teaching, is that Reiki consistently helps people feel better — physically, emotionally and mentally. The research supports this. The experience of thousands of our students supports this. And the fact that major hospitals around the world are integrating Reiki into their care programmes supports this.

The best way to understand Reiki is to experience it for yourself.
