How to Change the World

Do you sometimes think about the world’s problems (environmental, political, social, etc.) and feel impotent to do anything?

Do you hear forecasts of impending catastrophes and want to bury your head in the proverbial sand?

At times, I know I do.

Sometimes, when I learn more about the rainforests being cut down, when I travel and see beggars lining the streets of third-world countries, when news of political unrest and bloodshed blares out at me from the Internet and newsstands, I just want to forget about it all and hope for the best.

But the best doesn’t come about by forgetting.

The best comes about through action.

From you and me taking action.

And yet, as true as that might be, what exactly can we do?

Chances are we are not famous. Chances are, we don’t have millions of dollars at our disposal or high-powered connections.

So, how can we bring about positive change in the world? How can we rewrite the script? How can we dismantle the dire forecasts and prophecies that many say are heading our way?

The answer, I believe, is that we need to embody a saying we have all heard many times before: we need to be the change we wish to see in the world.

And yet how can we do that? It’s one thing to tell us to be the change we wish to see in the world, another to tell us how to do it.

Because this part is certainly not as self-evident as I imagine it is meant to be. For instance, if we want to eradicate hunger, are we meant to: a) eat more? b) go to Africa to feed the starving children? c) volunteer at Red Cross? d) what?

With the exception of eating more so that we are the full-bellied souls that we wish to see in the world, large numbers of us are not going to do b or c.

Some will, for sure, but many people are too busy and entrenched in their lives to consider adding more complications.

So the question is: What can they do?

Change the Self – Change the World

In the New Age (Spiritual) community, we are always told that everything is energy.

We are told of the Butterfly Effect, of how everything influences everything else.

Well, it is time we stop simply giving lip service to this belief and let it be the guiding principle of everything we do.

Because if it is true – and I believe it is – then we need to dedicate all of our available resources to changing our inner state of being, for it is in this way that we shall energetically affect the rest of the world and, as a result, ultimately make the changes we wish to see on mental, emotional, and physical levels.

The Power of Goodness

The Japanese researcher Masaru Emoto conducted a wide range of experiments examining the effect positive and negative thoughts and words have on water crystals.

The beauty of his research is that it demonstrates how our thoughts and words truly do create physical change in the world.

For instance, when he taped the words “beauty” and “love” to a glass of water, froze it, and then took pictures (through a microscope) of the water crystals that had formed in the water, he discovered that they were generally symmetrical and beautiful.

On the other hand, if he taped words like “Devil” or sentences like “I hate you” on the glass of water and repeated the same process, the water either didn’t form any obvious water crystal or it formed grotesque and mutilated ones.

Similarly, Emoto experimented on three bowls of cooked rice, which he left sitting on a table for several weeks. During this period, he said sweet words to one of the bowls of rice, nasty words to another, while ignoring the final bowl of rice altogether.

Curiously, the bowl of rice he said sweet things to stayed in pretty good shape. The one he said nasty things to went mouldy, and the one he ignored was a hideous, mouldy mess.

From this, we can conclude that words and attention matter. And not only in an abstract way.

Inner Change Creates Outer Change

From Emoto’s experiments, we see that the energy associated with words and emotions can create physical change in the world around us.

As a result, if we find greater inner balance, then this balance will spread out to help harmonize the world around us.

We observe this frequently when an energetic and positive person enters the room. Their energy raises the energy of everyone around them.

The change everyone in the room experiences then has a ripple effect, as they interact more positively with other people, who, in turn, interact more positively with their friends and acquaintances, and so on.

In this way, one small positive action can produce tremendous results. And if enough of us can cultivate a positive energy (something Reiki, Pellowah, and other healing modalities can definitely help with), then massive change can occur.

Becoming the Light

So, what does this mean for us on a practical level?

It means making an effort to become increasingly aware of the energy that radiates from us.

It means cultivating an inner state of peace not just for us, but for the world around us.

It means taking responsibility for the effect we have on the world, not just through our words and actions, but also through our thoughts and inner states of being.

This is a higher level of morality.

This is the shift that will truly change the world.
