Have you ever noticed how some people seem unshakeable?
They handle stress without falling apart. Money worries don't consume them. They move through the world with a quiet confidence that everything will work out.
The secret isn't positive thinking or good genes. It's a balanced root chakra.
The root chakra, or muladhara, lies at the base of your energy system. It governs grounding, safety, and survival instincts. When strong, it brings stability, vitality, and a natural sense of belonging.
But when it's out of balance, life becomes an uphill struggle.
Imbalance often shows up in ways that are easy to notice:
Here's what most people don't realize: your root chakra can be imbalanced in two completely different ways.
It can be underactive – leaving you insecure and anxious, constantly worrying about money or safety. Or it can be overactive – leading to stubbornness, aggression, or an obsession with accumulating material possessions.
Understanding both states is the first step to healing.
Sit or stand so your feet connect firmly with the ground - this physical connection creates the foundation for energetic grounding.
Why does this matter? Because your root chakra is literally your connection to earth energy. Without that physical anchor, you're trying to ground yourself in thin air.
Next, focus on breathwork.
Most people breathe too high when they're stressed - right up in their chest where anxiety lives. But root chakra work requires low, slow breathing.
Practice slow nasal breathing while imagining energy rising from the ground, through your legs, and into your base chakra. This imagery directly engages the root chakra and creates an immediate energetic shift.
In Japanese Reiki, we also work with the hara (just below the navel), but for root chakra healing specifically, it's more direct to focus on drawing energy straight into the base.
Finally, set a clear intention. Even a simple inner statement such as "I connect to my base chakra now" helps move the practice from theory to direct experience.
This preparation isn't optional - it's what separates powerful healing sessions from wasted time.
Grounding practices return awareness to the body and deepen stability.
But here's the thing: most people think grounding means sitting cross-legged and visualizing roots. That's fine, but there are far more effective approaches.
Walking meditation or earthing: This isn't just about walking barefoot on grass (though that helps). It's about walking with intention and awareness. Each step becomes a conscious connection to the earth beneath you.
Walk barefoot on grass or soil, or if indoors, stand mindfully and imagine energy being drawn up from the ground with each breath. The key is feeling each footfall as an anchor point.
Affirmations with movement: Words alone don't change energy patterns - but words combined with movement do.
Repeat phrases like "I am safe, I belong here" while walking slowly or standing still. The physical movement helps embed the affirmation into your nervous system rather than just your thoughts.
Food and lifestyle anchors: Your root chakra responds to physical nourishment.
Warm, nourishing meals, protein-rich foods, steady sleep routines, and even wearing red can subtly reinforce root chakra energy. This isn't about complicated diets - it's about choosing foods that make your body feel solid and grounded rather than light and scattered.
These simple steps bring the root chakra into balance and help you feel supported in daily life. The beauty is their simplicity - no special equipment or years of training required.
Most healing modalities work from the outside in. Reiki works directly with your energy system, creating changes at the source rather than just managing symptoms.
Begin by placing your hands over the pelvis, sacrum, knees, and feet. These positions channel energy into areas most connected to grounding.
Why these specific spots? Your pelvis houses your base chakra. Your sacrum often stores old fears and survival trauma. Your knees need to be energetically open for earth energy to flow up through your legs. Your feet are your direct connection points to earth energy.
If you are attuned to Reiki Level 2, you can add the Cho Ku Rei power symbol to enhance stability. This symbol amplifies the grounding quality of Reiki energy and helps create a stronger foundation.
As Reiki flows, you may notice sensations like tingling, warmth, or calm stillness. If you feel nothing, know that the energy is still moving. Reiki works without effort or strain - your role is simply to let it flow.
The results speak for themselves: most people feel more grounded and centered within minutes.
Sound vibration resonates naturally with the muladhara.
But here's what most people get wrong: they chant "LAM" like they're calling across a field - high and light. The root chakra responds to low, deep tones that you can feel reverberating in your pelvis and lower back.
Chanting "LAM": This seed mantra, voiced in a low tone, can create immediate grounding. Think bass notes, not soprano. Chant from your belly, not your throat.
When you get the pitch right, you'll feel the vibration settling into your lower body within seconds. It's like giving your root chakra a tuning fork to sync with.
Rhythmic sound: Slow drumming or toning reinforces stability and steadiness.
You don't need fancy equipment - even tapping a steady rhythm on your thighs while focusing on your root chakra works. The repetitive beat helps shift your nervous system from anxiety to calm.
Reiki with sound: Here's something most practitioners miss - Reiki can be paired with chanting or sound therapy for stronger resonance.
Place your hands in the root chakra position and hum or chant while the energy flows. The vibration carries the Reiki deeper into your energetic system than either technique achieves alone.
Many practitioners find that combining these approaches creates more powerful results than using either technique alone.
Everyone talks about underactive root chakras, but what about when your root chakra is in overdrive?
Overactivity in the root chakra can feel just as destabilizing as underactivity. Signs include:
These people often look confident on the surface, but underneath they're terrified of losing control.
To calm excess energy, practice gentle breathing, restorative yoga postures like Child's Pose, or Reiki sessions where you simply allow the intelligent Reiki energy to flow and balance as needed.
The key is redirection, not suppression. You're not trying to shut down your root chakra energy - you're teaching it to flow more smoothly.
These methods allow the chakra to soften back into balance rather than forcing it into submission.
Healing sticks when you practice consistently.
A short routine done daily trumps marathon sessions done sporadically. Here's a balanced 10-minute stack you can use daily:
2 minutes: Slow, grounding breath into the base chakra - feel energy flowing up from the earth through your legs.
3 minutes: Reiki hands at the pelvis - let the energy flow without trying to direct it.
2 minutes: Chant LAM in a low voice - feel the vibration in your lower belly and pelvis.
3 minutes: Stand barefoot on the ground or grass, imagining energy rising from the earth into your root chakra with each breath.
Why this specific sequence? Each step builds on the previous one, creating a cumulative effect that's stronger than the sum of its parts.
Repeated daily, this simple practice builds stability and resilience over time. Your energy system learns to maintain balance automatically.
Sometimes you need more than a daily routine.
For deeper immersion, a seven-day reset can create significant shifts in your energy system.
The progression is intentional - each day builds on the previous one, creating momentum toward deeper healing.
Journaling sensations, emotions, or energetic shifts each day helps you notice changes that may otherwise seem too subtle.
Expect steady, incremental progress rather than sudden transformation. Real root chakra healing happens gradually as your energy system learns new patterns of balance.
Even with the best techniques, challenges arise.
"I feel nothing." This is rare, but even if it does happen, it doesn't mean the healing isn't working. Reiki still flows even when you don't feel it. Sensitivity develops with practice, so focus on consistency rather than sensation.
"I get restless." Instead of stopping, permit yourself to feel restless but keep going. You can even repeat to yourself, "It is okay that I feel restless."
Staying with the session is part of the healing. Often restlessness appears just before a breakthrough - your energy system is shifting, and the restlessness signals that old patterns are being disrupted.
"I feel more emotional." This is usually a healing release, not a problem.
Feeling emotional often means deep work is taking place. Your root chakra stores old fears and survival trauma, and when this energy releases, emotions surface.
The intensity typically passes quickly, leaving you lighter and more balanced than before.
Root chakra healing is remarkably forgiving. Trust the process, and trust your body's wisdom.
Healing the root chakra is the first step in building a strong energetic foundation.
Reiki naturally balances energy, creating stability in both body and mind. Once your root chakra feels stable and grounded, you might notice other chakras calling for attention.
The second chakra governs creativity and emotional balance. The third chakra affects your sense of personal power and ability to take action. Each builds on the foundation of a healthy root chakra.
