When Reiki doesn't seem to flow, the issue is usually not that Reiki has stopped working altogether. More often, one of four things is happening: the receiver is not truly receptive, the practitioner is trying to channel more energy than the body can comfortably carry, energetic blockages are slowing the flow, or the person expected big sensations and felt very little. At Om Reiki, Jeremy O'Carroll teaches that this topic is best approached practically rather than dramatically. The aim is to understand what kind of flow problem you are actually dealing with, then respond in a grounded way.
This matters whether you are a Reiki student, a practising healer, or someone receiving sessions and wondering why you did not feel much. A good answer to this question needs to cover both the practitioner's side and the client's side, because the apparent problem can begin in either place.
The first thing to notice is the word seem. Sometimes Reiki is flowing, but the practitioner or the client expected it to feel more dramatic than it did. Om Reiki's healing material explains that some people feel warmth, tingling, pulsing, heaviness, or waves of energy, while others feel almost nothing at all. That difference in sensation does not prove that the energy was absent.
At other times, the session really does feel flat or strained. In those cases, the question becomes: is the issue receptivity, energetic capacity, or blocked flow? Om Reiki already has useful material for all three.
This is one of the most common worries around Reiki. Om Reiki's session page says it very directly: some people feel nothing. Not a sausage. That does not automatically mean nothing happened. Many people report very little during the session, then notice deeper sleep, emotional shifts, or reduced pain afterwards.
The FAQ and testimonials support this point too. Students already worry that they might not feel the energy. That concern is normal. A better question than `Did I feel fireworks?` is `Did something shift during the next day or two?`
Om Reiki's practical explanation is that the practitioner opens the channel and the ki goes where it is needed. The person receiving does not have to feel every movement of that process for the session to be worthwhile.
This is where Om Reiki's `How to Channel More Healing Energy` material becomes especially useful. Jeremy teaches that healers often encounter energy strain when more energy is flowing through the body than it is yet comfortable carrying. In other words, the problem may not be that Reiki is absent. The problem may be that the practitioner has not yet built enough energetic capacity.
Om Reiki's practical solutions include building a stronger foundation through the hara, the base chakra, and the Earth star; strengthening the palm chakras so more energy can flow through the hands; and paying attention to meridians and other energetic pathways so flow does not hit bottlenecks.
This is a much better explanation than assuming a `bad Reiki day`. If the taps are narrow, less water can pass through them. If the meridians are tight, the flow can feel congested. If the foundation is weak, the body strains more easily.
Yes. Om Reiki's older article on this subject makes that point strongly. If the other person does not really want healing, or only accepts it reluctantly, the session often feels off. They are less present, less receptive, and the whole exchange can feel oddly misaligned.
This does not mean the person is wrong or defective. It means healing cannot be forced well. One of Jeremy's clearest rules of thumb is to give healing to someone who genuinely wants it. That is a useful lesson for both ordinary in-person healing and distance sessions.
Om Reiki's existing material points in a consistent direction: build a stronger energetic foundation, strengthen the body's entry and exit points, and keep practising. That includes meditations such as breathing into the hara, continued healing work, and the developmental support of attunements.
It also helps to adjust expectations. Reiki does not always look dramatic from the outside. Some sessions are warm and obvious. Others are quiet. Some reveal blockages strongly. Others work more gently. If the practitioner keeps the channel open and the receiver is genuinely willing, the flow is often doing more than it first appears.
This is exactly why good Reiki training matters. A strong course should not leave students thinking that `Reiki doesn't flow` is a mysterious failure they just have to accept. At Om Reiki, the teaching already points to practical causes and practical remedies: grounding, Hara work, palm chakras, attunements, intuition, and realistic expectations about sensation.
If you want to understand how that training fits together, these pages help: what you learn in Reiki Level 1, what changes at Level 2, how to channel more healing energy, why grounding matters in Japanese Reiki, and what happens during a Reiki session.
When Reiki does not seem to flow, the wisest response is not panic. It is diagnosis. Is the receiver really receptive? Is the practitioner overstraining? Are there blockages slowing the flow? Or is the session simply subtler than expected?
Om Reiki's teaching is strong here because it keeps the answer practical. Build the foundation. Keep the channel open. Let go of forcing. And remember that a quiet session is not automatically an empty one.
