Reiki Courses in Australia

Reiki courses are easy to find in Australia.

Comparing them is harder.

Most courses use the same labels: Level 1, Level 2 and Master. But the training behind those labels can vary a great deal from one course to the next.

For instance, one Level 1 course might leave plenty of time for hands-on practice, while another moves quickly through the material.

Jeremy O’Carroll (the founder of Om Reiki) encourages students to look past the labels and weigh up those differences.

That means comparing courses by location, level, delivery, completeness and recognition, then checking the current details on each course page.

Reiki Courses by Location

Om Reiki maintains a page for each of its course locations. Each page carries the current schedules and course details for that location.

Reiki Course Levels

Level 1 is the foundation. The attunement connects the student to Reiki, and the course then teaches self-healing, meditation and the Reiki precepts before moving on to hands-on healing for others.

Level 2 grows out of Level 1 practice. Students learn the traditional symbols and mantras, develop stronger sensitivity and intuition, and learn to give distant healing.

Master Level is about advanced personal and practitioner development. Teacher and attunement training is an additional path, so students don't need to want to teach to benefit from it.

For a fuller side-by-side view, read Reiki Level 1 vs Level 2 vs Master. For more on the first level, see What Do You Learn in Reiki Level 1?

What a Complete Reiki Course Includes

Hands-on healing is only one part of Reiki. Traditional Japanese Reiki has five components: attunements, meditation, the Reiki precepts, hands-on and hands-off healing, and symbols and mantras.

So a course that presents Reiki only as hands-on healing is not teaching the whole system.

That makes the syllabus one of the most useful things to compare. Check whether a course covers all five components, and at which level each one is introduced.

Timing matters too. The attunement gives an immediate connection, and students can begin healing from the first day.

Of course, starting is not the same as reaching full depth. The whole system keeps deepening through use, meditation and practice.

So a complete syllabus matters right from the first level. It gives students every part of the system to keep practising long after the class ends.

In-Person or Online Reiki Training?

Both can work. Om Reiki has found that live online attunements and classes are effective.

Even so, Om Reiki recommends in-person training for the foundation levels whenever it is practical. That's because students receive their attunements in a held, shared space. They also practise giving and receiving Reiki with other people, and they get live feedback from the teacher.

Of course, travelling to a class isn't always possible. So when distance, health or circumstances make attending difficult, live online learning remains a valid alternative.

Online resources have their place too. They are useful for theory, revision, guided practice and continuing education.

Either way, the same standards apply. Contact hours, feedback and real practice still matter, whatever the format.

Certificates, Lineage and Accreditation

A Reiki certificate records that a student completed the training and was initiated into a level.

But a certificate doesn't, by itself, prove mastery or readiness to work with clients. Practice is what makes the skills a student's own.

Lineage is a different matter. It is the unbroken chain of teachers leading back to Mikao Usui, the founder of Reiki. A reputable teacher can explain theirs.

Accreditation is where much of the confusion lies. The Australian Reiki Connection (ARC) states that it does not accredit Reiki courses. It also states that it is not a Registered Training Organisation (RTO) or an accreditation body recognised by the Australian Skills Quality Authority (ASQA).

ARC also says no ASQA-accredited Reiki course exists in Australia, because only RTOs deliver accredited courses.

Om Reiki is not an RTO either, so its courses are not nationally accredited.

Comparing Reiki Courses

So once you know the level and location you want, compare the details:

  • the actual syllabus
  • course length and contact hours
  • how attunements are conducted
  • hands-on practice time
  • class format and size
  • whether the teacher keeps a regular personal practice and teaches regularly
  • a clear lineage
  • manuals, follow-up, access to the teacher and practice groups

Conclusion

So start with the level you need. Choose the delivery that suits your circumstances. Then check the syllabus, the teacher, the lineage and the support after the course.

Once you've done that, check the current course and location pages for details and upcoming dates.
